In the wholesale world, “stainless steel” is a broad term that covers a wide spectrum of quality. For a wholesaler, mistaking 201 series for 304, or 304 for 316L, isn’t just a technical error—it’s a massive liability risk. Knowing how to distinguish 304 from 316 stainless steel at the receiving dock prevents costly batch mistakes.

Whether you are inspecting a factory floor or a shipping container, here is your field guide to verifying material integrity on the spot.


1. The Chemical Mismatch: Understanding the Trio

Before testing, you must know what you are looking for. The primary difference lies in the chemical composition, which dictates corrosion resistance and price.

2. How to Distinguish 304 from 316 Stainless Steel in the Field

Reliable wholesalers don’t guess; they test. Carry these three “weapons” in your inspection kit:

A. The Chemical Identification Reagent (The “Drop Test”)

This is the most cost-effective tool for quick sorting. You apply a drop of specific acid-based liquid to the cleaned metal surface and watch the color change.

For 304: The liquid typically remains colorless or turns a very pale yellow after 1-3 minutes.

For 316: The 316-specific reagent will stay clear. If it turns red/pink, it is likely 304 or lower.

For 201: The reagent will turn dark red or black almost instantly due to the high manganese content.

B. The Handheld XRF Analyzer (The “Pro” Choice)

If you are moving tons of material, a Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Analyzer is mandatory. It provides a non-destructive chemical breakdown in seconds. Grade chemistries for welded mechanical tubing are defined under ASTM A554.

Every master coil that enters our Foshan plant is verified with a handheld XRF analyzer before slitting. We verify the nickel and molybdenum content on the spot—a coil tagged 304 that displays under 8.0% Ni is immediately flagged.   • What to check: Look specifically for Molybdenum (Mo).
  • If the screen shows $Mo > 2.0\%$, it is genuine 316L.
  • If $Mo \approx 0\%$, it is 304, regardless of what the stamp says.

C. The Magnet Test (Use with Caution)

A common myth is that “stainless steel isn’t magnetic.” This is a half-truth.

304 and 316L are austenitic and are generally non-magnetic in their raw state.

However, cold-working (bending, stamping, or drawing) can induce “stress magnetism.” A 304 sink bowl might be magnetic at the curves but non-magnetic on the flat rim.

Verdict: Use magnets to weed out cheap 400-series steel, but never use them to distinguish between 304 and 316L.


3. Red Flags to Watch For

As a wholesaler, keep an eye out for these “bad actor” signals:

  • The “Too Good to be True” Price: The London Metal Exchange (LME) prices for Nickel and Molybdenum are public. If a quote for 316L is suspiciously close to 304 pricing, the material is likely “D-Grade” or mislabeled.
  • Vague MTRs (Material Test Reports): A legitimate factory should provide a heat-traceable MTR. If the report looks photocopied, lacks a heat number, or has inconsistent font styles, demand a re-test.
  • Surface Pitting: If “304” stock stored in a warehouse shows tiny tea-colored spots (pitting) after only a month, it is likely 201 or high-impurity scrap melt.

4. What to Check on Incoming Batches

  1. Visual: Check for uniform finish and clear laser-etched stamps.
  2. Magnet: If it’s highly magnetic on a flat surface, it’s not 304/316.
  3. Chemical: Use 304/316 identifying drops for instant verification.
  4. XRF: For high-value orders, scan 10% of the batch randomly.
